Just wanted to take a few minutes to sit with this before calling family and friends. (This was a private entry until everything was official.) It looks like I have a position for the next school year. My CV just got much stronger on the publication side as I've only relatively recently begun to turn my attention to that as well as toward my teaching. So it's not the tenure-track position I was hoping for, as the "season" for Fall 2010 jobs has basically come to an end just as my CV started shooting up people's "short list" charts in a serious way.
I was one of two finalists for a position at Ohio Dominican University in Columbus, Ohio that looked great fun, but I had the obvious disadvantage of not actually possessing the speciality for which they were looking (pastoral or moral theology). All their original advert had said was "Systematics/Pastoral" theology, which I interpreted as an "either/or" request. No one had said "moral or pastoral theology" until the phone interview, which took me entirely by surprise. That I made it to the final list of two candidates spoke well to the general strength of my CV now that I had the Ph.D. in hand, but, as I said, at the end of the season.
So it looks as though the next year will have me teaching at Loyola University New Orleans, a Jesuit school on St. Charles Avenue, right across from Audubon Park and next door to Tulane University. I received a note from the department Chair to the effect that if my transcripts and letters check out, they'll likely make me an offer on Friday.
