Random: Watching "Dangerous Beauty" and Historical Stereotypes
Urg. Just watched a fabulously disappointing movie, Dangerous Beauty, starring the lovely Catherine McCormack, who you might remember as Mel's beloved in Braveheart. If you thought Mel's movie took liberties with history, this one would make you writhe in agony. Playing the part of Veronica Franco, an actual Venetian courtesan of the late 1500s (and thus making the movie "a true story"), the film goes on to indulge in all of the most banal sort of stereotypes the modern era has against any period but its own.
