Random/Theological Notebook: Fathers of the Church Meme

Skellig Michael Stairway
It was only a matter of time before Dan (or someone else in my circle here) found a meme that specifically targeted those of us interested in Patristics. And it was virtually inevitable, given my result, that I would end up the victim of the same sophomoric jokes that I made when I was a sophomore and hadn't read the man....

You’re Origen!

You do nothing by half-measures. If you’re going to read the Bible, you want to read it in the original languages. If you’re going to teach, you’re going to reach as many souls as possible, through a proliferation of lectures and books. If you’re a guy and you’re going to fight for purity … well, you’d better hide the kitchen shears.

Find out which Church Father you are at The Way of the Fathers!

Ouch. I still cringe reading his letters to Augustine all these years later.

I am apparently also Origen.

Which kind of makes me cringe in parts I don't even have.

Yet it speaks to your universal perspective. Ouch: too bad that this is what he's remembered for: he really was superlatively kick-ass.

Whee, I'm St. Justin Martyr.

Rock on.

hahah, castration jokes for the win!

I got:

You’re St. Melito of Sardis!

You have a great love of history and liturgy. You’re attached to the traditions of the ancients, yet you recognize that the old world — great as it was — is passing away. You are loyal to the customs of your family, though you do not hesitate to call family members to account for their sins.

Exotic! I actually don't know much about Melito, myself: never read in his direction....
22nd-Feb-2008 05:18 am (UTC) - Neat!

You’re St. Justin Martyr!

You have a positive and hopeful attitude toward the world. You think that nature, history, and even the pagan philosophers were often guided by God in preparation for the Advent of the Christ. You find “seeds of the Word” in unexpected places. You’re patient and willing to explain the faith to unbelievers.

See? That's why I dig Justin.
