Theological Notebook: Book Orders for "Theology Through the Centuries"

My students for next semester are going to be annoyed with me. I cut as much as I could, looking for texts where there was a reasonable version online, but I still ended up with a large pile of books for them to buy for the second-level course I'm teaching next semester, "Theology Through the Centuries," a sort of "great books" survey or seminar. But then, if this intimidates any slackers so that they go elsewhere – so that I only get a smaller number of the truly dedicated, who will do the work and contribute to the life of the class – well, I won't cry a lot of tears.

Athanasius, On The Incarnation

Augustine of Hippo, The Confessions

Benedict of Nursia, The Rule of Saint Benedict in English

Anselm of Canterbury, St. Anselm Basic Writings: Proslogium, Mologium, Gaunilo's In Behalf of the Fool, Cur Deus Homo

Julian of Norwich, A Lesson of Love: The Revelations of Julian of Norwich

Pope Benedict XVI, Christianity and the Crisis of Cultures

David N. Bell, Many Mansions: An Introduction to the Development & Diversity of Medieval Theology
