Personal: I Am Not Dead

How should I say this? Delicately? I'm not sure how. Firmly? To be sure. Boldly? Why not?

I am not dead.

I'm over in my office, currently, at my posted office hours for students, and I just found out from Gale, the woman who runs the Department of Theology, that someone who was very upset had called the Graduate School having heard that I had died. The Graduate School, not being able to confirm this, called Gale, and Gale checked in with me, and I performed all the conversational checks necessary to confirm that I was actually talking with her and not having a Sixth Sense-kind of experience.

Buy Life and Other ImpossibilitiesThus I repeat: I am not dead.

Or I could say it with literary flair, quoting Twain: "Rumours of my death have been greatly exaggerated."

If I were dead, however, it follows that my CD would become a very valuable collectors item, right? You'd want to buy lots of them as Christmas stocking-stuffers for people of taste you know, just to get them in on the opportunity, right? In fact, the thing is pretty okay on its own merits, so you might want to do that anyway. You know, just in case.

Yes, in a day that I wanted no further distractions, I've now spent writing affirmations of my ongoing loitering on planet Earth and now have to go over to the Graduate School to make an appearance. Hopefully, I won't get hit by a bus crossing the street: that would really make everything weird....

What ought you have done, if you weren't busy... living?

Oh, I'm doing the last-minute, still-working-on-my-conference-paper thing. You know, for the Modernity conference you declined to attend.

Why Michael Anthony, that was almost a Jewish-grandma-level guilt trip you laid on there! I'm impressed.

It's still on my Outlook calendar, ironically -- I'd feel appropriately contrite about missing it if:
A) I wasn't so smug about having my paper turned into an article (due this week!)
B) I didn't know I was going to Marquette in March (still no date)

And I would actually be disappointed if I hadn't known you'd be visiting up here before too long. But March? I had it in my head as May....

And as to the article: congratulations! Somehow that one had slipped past me, I think. Super news!

I thought May too, but the Secretary/Treasurer (AKA my Director) says they usually meet much earlier than when they did last year -- closer to late March/early April.

I haven't posted in ages, which is why the news has gone without fanfare -- I'll be more excited when it gets sent off Thursday (and then when I hear it's gone through review, and then REALLY when it shows up in proper print in early 2007)
