Theology Notebook: Willi Marxsen and Projection as Scholarship
What an utterly aggravating set of lectures Marxsen's book has turned out to be. I really, really hope that the 20th century will have been the beginning and the end of the "If I ignore the text as it is, change all the words around, and cut out the inconvenient parts, it's really amazing how well the text supports my theory" School of New Testament scholarship. I'm embarrassed that these lectures could have been presented as seriously as they were. But, then, it was the heyday of the "Death of God" theologians, too. Preserve us, Lord, from trendy scholarship.
