Random: Icons for The Lord of the Rings and Star Trek: The Original Series

I See You!
I've found that when I want to relax and not have to think so hard (in an academic kind of way), I really enjoy playing with graphics and design. So this morning I've been amusing myself with making some icons from some of my favourite mythologies that haven't as yet been represented in my own pile of icons. I guess I was largely provoked or inspired by nimoloth's recent poll on which fictional universe people would prefer to live in. So, obviously, in this case, she got me thinking about Tolkien's Middle-earth and the Star Trek universe. Anyway, any thoughts, opinions or preferences are welcome. Oh, and help yourself, should the random urge strike.

Hey you--thanks! I was digging around for Star Trek pics with the Big Three in them, basically because as I noted, I've always felt that at its deepest and best, that mythology was about friendship. "Friendship" is a much deeper reality than the "diversity" that is usually cited, which is only an aspect of the friendship here, stretching as it does even in the friendship with an alien. But when I was looking at that particular photograph, I just started to smile about that old TV convention of every episode of a show ending in laughter--sometimes hideously forced laughter--and that in itself seemed too fun an idea to miss playing with here. I also then figured there may be LJ entries where that might be just the thing.

As to the other, well, The Lord of the Rings is all so Catholic in its themes, and obviously Lent is up near the forefront of my mind right now, so that "original sin" theme with the Ring came out at me, and hints of Romans 3:23 behind it.... Which one did you like better?

your idea about friendship is very persuasive. most of the pleasure of those shows for me, since i'm not really into sci-fi, was the characters and their interplay. bones and jim and spock, what a team! they really are mythic.

i like the face better in the "we all fall" one, but the legend better in the "in the end, everyone falls" one. so i went with the picture i liked better, the longer shot of him holding up the chain and ring. very nice. (haven't had time to upload it yet.)

I find the best of the Star Trek novels that have been written--such as those by Diane Duane--to be the deepest readings of what the show offered. I haven't been reading many novels in recent years: I think perhaps the volume of Trek has begun to obscure that deepest route and now most of the stories are just "action in space" without the deep relational grounding or the creative and surprising sci-fi.

Huh. Interesting--thanks for taking the time to provide the detail! I had less space to work with on the one where he's holding up the ring, or else I might have actually just tried the same text and font. I've been back-and-forth myself on the starkness of the second text.

The ring is mine, bitch.

PS. Got the book. Thanks for sending it along.

lol... Does that mean you picked a particular one? By the way, you now have six userpics, so I'll be interested to see how (and if) you expand. Like I said, I did decide to borrow your "theme" for appropriate entries, so by all means add this one to your collection, should you so desire. I've trimmed it down to a suitable form, as you can see.

Arg! Scratch that! This was the first time I've used it, and the background was supposed to be transparent for the both of these! I'll have to tinker....

I love the Star Trek ones. All those primary colours are well suited to icons... But I'm a child of The Next Generation myself *g*!

I'm going to have Star Trek theme music in my head all day now.

You could do a lot worse, pal, and we both know it!

So what are we talking here, "The Motion Picture"/Next Generation theme? Or do you possess anything more specific, so that you can hear the fabulous, understated and frantic energy of "Stealing the Enterprise" from the Star Trek III: The Search for Spock soundtrack, or the simple gorgeousness of Picard's flute theme from the science fiction classic of "The Inner Light?"

(Essentially, I just gave you "normal" and "geek" options of response...)
