Personal/Dork Whine: Mortar Boards = Academic Fashion Death

Aaauuggghhh!!! Mortar boards?!! Every picture I saw of Marquette Ph.D. robes had tams, not mortar boards! I never would have come here if I'd known I had to graduate in a propeller-beanie and not a cool tam! I guess all the cool Marquette people have tams made instead when they buy their robes.

Yep, you can't rent a tam, you have to buy it -- mortarboards are cheap and thus disposable. My mother is disappointed I didn't order a tam (yet).

Devoney bought her tam on eBay, FYI...

Yeah, I glanced at those last night: but it's too late to try to get anything here by Sunday morning. Stupid mortar boards!

I didn't even consider buying yet, even though I'll have to for future hoopla. Someone once told me – I can't remember who, now: it could just as easily have been you – that you should hold off on ordering them from the big company that does all this stuff, and have them made by a tailor, as you can get better material that drapes better and is fairly priced. If I'm remembering that correctly, that could be reasonable. I see the place that sells them on eBay is cheaper than what I saw from the company yesterday, although I had an interesting time talking with the doctoral robes rep, who gave me some suggestions on having a set made, like having crimson (theology) piping on the chevrons, and such.

"I was just curious enough to go find out what exactly was a tam....(or really, truly procrasinating over finishing a lesson plan for a class that starts in 2.5 hours?). "

"I have to say tams ARE pretty cool and their origins are Scottish and Irish; so you better get "sewing man" - so you can capitalize on your Irish heritage - longing to address you as Dr. Dork also, because it is just too darn funny - but I'll refrain from the "outright" and just confess the desire to do so (no difference in the end is their really?)"
